Meet your new science besties!

science lovers

Like the plot of any good love story — we needed an idyllic setting, a shared interest, and a limited amount of time together — the scene was set for Nicole Foster and Andi Greene in late 2019 at a scientific conference. Before a field excursion through alligator infested tidal creeks in the deep American south, Nicole, a solo-Aussie, had to befriend someone. That someone was Andi! Over many beers and even more laughter, the duo formed a tight-knit group of female scientists who bonded over the frustrations of being a graduate student, how each of us managed to get here as aspiring professional scientists, and what was next. We all wanted to impact our field and the broader field of STEM, but how? Nicole and Andi dreamed of a future podcast and maybe even creating a non-profit focused on grassroots research...

The podcast is born

By 2022, Andi and Nicole were still keeping in close contact from the beaches of Monterey, California to Kangaroo Island, Australia. Andi even visited Nicole on her first international trip. The reunion offered reprieve and motivation after a long two years of COVID-19! During this time they both wrapped up their degrees. Nicole earned a PhD for her work with eDNA and Andi a M.S. for her work in nitrogen cycling, both in coastal marshes. After the trip, they met weekly over Zoom and helped turn a small organization — Climate Aware, founded by Andi's geologist brother — into a non-profit. After having their first taste of grassroots research with three interns in summer 2022, they had the momentum to start their creative passion project: Badass Women in STEM
